About the 100 Mile Cycle

Every year we, the pupils of Willow Park and Blackrock College, set out on a 100 mile (160km) cycle to raise funds for projects in Brazil and Africa.

Every cent that we raise goes directly to where it is needed; none of your money is spent on administration or overheads. Any costs involved in running the event are covered by other events, such as our cake sale and table quiz.

Please take the time (it doesn't take long) to explore our website and find out more about the people that we (and you too) have helped in Africa and Brazil. If you have time you can also visit our club website at www.willowwheelers.ie

NOTE - JOINING AT MAYNOOTH: We are meeting at NUI south campus (the old campus). This is at the end of Maynooth Main Street when you are driving from Dublin. Do not go to the more modern North Campus. After driving through the gate turn left, then bear right and follow the road all the way to the back of the campus. Pass through a raised barrier and a hedgerow, turn right into a large car park behind the buildings. There is a wooden bishops door where registration will take place. Toilets facilities are available. We will have the route sign posted from the main gates so it should be straight forward. Anyone wishing to leave cars there can do so. If you have any queries please email us from the Contact Us page.

Projects We Support

E-mail Print PDF

Since 1990 we have helped many projects in Africa and Brazil.  Here is just a small sample:

Brazil

  • San Paulo, Brazil. Fr. Pat Clarke. Project to help street children.
  • San Paulo, Brazil. Fr. Hugh Boyle. Helped finish new community centre.

Kenya

  • Pokot, Kenya. Fr David Conway. The Camel Project.
  • Nairobi, Kenya. St. Community Centre/Food Programme.
  • East Pokot, Kenya. Education, 3rd level college fees for two student teachers.

Ghana

  • Adenguama, Ghana. Bore hole and pumps for a village of 7-8,000 people.
  • Bantama, Ghana. Holy Spirit Primary School

We helped Fr. John Owusu Achiaw CSSP with part of the construction costs of a new Primary school in Bantama Parish, Ashanti Region, Ghana. Bantama is the former parish of Fr. Richard Olin, who remains in regular contact with the parish. This project addressed the lack of Primary School facilities available in the parish. The lack of a suitable environment for primary education effects both boys and girls. However as the girl child in Africa is highly vulnerable to a range of serious harmful cultural practices and is often forced to leave school at an early age, or not allowed attend at all, the lack of a safe and secure primary education, in close proximity to their families, has a particularly negative impact on girls living in Bantama and the surrounding villages.
